PrintWhere® Security - PrinterOn Service Transactions

PrinterOn is sensitive to the security and privacy concerns of our users. Since PrinterOn.Net is a web services organization, transactions must take place between our technology components and the PrinterOn web site in order to provide you with the features and capabilities you expect. This page describes the information that PrintWhere provides to PrinterOn.

All communications that incorporate user or destination information are encrypted using SSL to ensure your privacy. The information that we record on behalf of our members is visible only to that member when logged at the PrinterOn web site. All transactions are initiated by PrintWhere.

Note that the print data itself does NOT pass through PrinterOn, it is sent directly to the destination printer.

Permission Checking

User Credentials
If you have entered your PrinterOn Member ID and Password in the PrintWhere dialog box, then this information is used by PrinterOn to validate your identity and grant access to appropriate printers.

Destination

The requested print destination is also passed to PrinterOn in order to ensure that you are entitled to use the device, and request that PrinterOn update PrintWhere with the correct settings for that destination.

Version Number
PrintWhere reports its current version number during operation. This is used to notify the user when a new release is available.

Activity Reports

The following information about a print job is recorded at PrinterOn to allow Administrators to obtain reports about their printing activity:

  • Number of pages
  • Destination Printer
  • Reference number, uniquely created for each print
  • Time and date of the print activity
  • Success code, reporting the last known status of the print request

Installation

When first installed, PrintWhere performs a one-time communication with PrinterOn.net to record the installation and obtain a unique software identifier. This identifier is used by PrinterOn to gather statistical information on the numbers and versions of PrintWhere that are in use.

Note that some of this information might also be recorded on behalf of the owner of a printer service: the identity of the user, number of pages, reference number, time and date, and name of the printer used.
